Bad Axe

While surveying the first state road through the Huron County wilderness in 1861, Rudolph Papst and George Willis Pack made camp here and found a much-used and badly damaged axe. At Pack's suggestion, Papst used the name "Bad Axe Camp" in the minutes of the survey and on a sign he placed along the main trail. By the time Papst returned from the Civil War, the name was on the map.

With just under 4,000 residents, Bad Axe is a quaint community surrounded by farmland and woods. The area offers a nice variety of restaurants, retail stores, florists, photographers, parks, churches, hair salons, hotels, and more services and retailers are coming to the area all the time! Bad Axe is located only 35 minutes from Lake Huron and offers many recreational activities for residents and visitors alike. Boating, fishing, hunting, camping, and golfing are just a few of the fun things to do in Michigan's Thumb.
